2014 Environmental Health Award Winners

A. Harry Bliss Editor’s Award 2014 Winner:
Nelson E. Fabian

Nelson Fabian was given the award for his regular column in the Journal of Environmental Health, which he wrote in his capacity as NEHA’s executive director. Fabian advocated strongly for the environmental health profession to look forward, innovate, and strive to remain relevant to the changing landscape of environmental health. This was a frequent theme of his columns and writing until he resigned from NEHA in July 0f 2014.

Walter S. Mangold Award 2014 Winner:
Welford Roberts, Virginia

"Welford Roberts, Project Manager and Occupational Toxicology Subject Matter Expert with ERP, LLC in Falls Church, Virginia. Roberts was given the award in honor of his numerous contributions to the environmental health profession throughout his long and illustrious career. His exploits include the development and implementation of industrial hygiene, sanitation, risk evaluation, management, and regulatory programs while serving as an environmental science officer in the US Army Reserves. Then, as a professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Roberts advocated the importance and potential of the environmental health profession, and mentored numerous future leaders of environmental health.

Nelson E. Fabian Environmental Health Innovation Award 2014 Winner:
Sacramento County Environmental Management Department

The Sacramento County Environmental Management Division was given the award for their work on a new electronic cross connection control program web portal that streamlined the management and tracking of nearly 15,000 backflow protection devices. The new portal vastly improves the way the agency manages its cross-connection control program by increasing customer access to data, improving compliance document processing times, and containing current costs associated with program administration.

 

 
NEHA Excellence in Sustainability 2014 Winner:
Energy Smart Colorado

This award was given to Energy Smart Colorado, a multi jurisdictional comprehensive energy efficiency retrofit program that provided necessary health, safety, and energy efficiency services to rural mountain communities in Colorado. Energy Smart Colorado helped homeowners complete over 3,000 home energy improvements and addressed over 200 instances where occupant health was threatened. In addition, reviewers noted the program’s creation of a revolving loan fund and database, as well as its innovative marketing and outreach efforts.

Past President's Award 2014 Winner:
Dr. Priscilla Oliver

This award is presented when NEHA’s previous presidents identify a hero for the profession who accomplishes much on behalf of environmental health but who does a lot of their work behind the scenes. Dr. Priscilla Oliver was given this award in honor of her many years working as an educator, mentor, and organizer who has helped to advance the environmental health profession in the world of academia.

Past President's Award 2014 Winner:
Tim Hatch

This award is presented when NEHA’s previous presidents identify a hero for the profession who accomplishes much on behalf of environmental health but who does a lot of their work behind the scenes. Hatch was selected for this award for his many years in the environmental health profession with such organizations as the International Federation of Environmental Health, the Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium, and the Alabama Department of Public Health.

Walter F. Snyder Award 2014 Winner:
Dr. Priscilla Oliver

Priscilla Oliver was presented this award in honor of her four decades of significant and lasting contributions to environmental and public health through education, leadership, dedication and community service. In particular, it’s Oliver’s work in the academic field as a teacher, mentor, and organizer for a host of colleges and universities such as Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Kennesaw State University among many others.
