ABOUT THE POSITION/DEPARTMENT:


Johnson County, KS is seeking a dedicated and experienced environmental or public health professional to assure compliance with the Private Wastewater Treatment provisions of the Johnson County Environmental Sanitary Code. Duties include but not limited to conducting inspections, reviewing and issuing permits and licenses, evaluating soils, investigating complaints, reviewing and approving site plans, evaluating and approving septic system designs, providing education and outreach to regulated parties, and taking enforcement actions when necessary. The successful candidate will assist with the development and implementation of the county's Local Environmental Protection Plan intended to protect water quality and water sheds.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health, Biology, Environmental Resources, natural or physical Sciences or related field.

  • Two years environmental compliance experience with a public health or environmental health agency or related industry.

  • Possess and maintain valid driver license.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Analytical skills, including research skills, ability to interpret data, ability to conceptualize, ability to analyze information, and ability to write formal recommendations based on findings.

  • Computer software – word-processing skills

  • Human Relations/Interpersonal skills

  • Written communication skills, including business writing, report writing.

  • Time management skills

  • Leadership skills, including strategic planning, goal setting, assessment, collaboration, and complex decision making


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Within 18 months of hire, must become a Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Registered Sanitarian with the National Environmental Health Association or the State of Kansas Joint Committee for the Credentialing of Sanitarians.
