The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Zika virus to be a Global Health Emergency. While this announcement should prioritize national and global resources to address the Zika virus, mosquito control is fundamentally a local issue. The foundations of any plans for minimizing the impact of the Zika virus should first look at prevention. The removal of standing water, containers, and other debris that can provide breeding grounds is something we can all participate in. Communication regarding the use of DEET, especially by pregnant women, mosquito-resistant clothing and use of screens and/or mosquito nettings can go a long way to minimize risk.
