Unit Chief, Climate Change and Environmental Determinants of Health

The incumbent is responsible for coordinating and managing the Organization’s program of work on Climate Change and Environmental Determinants of Health within the Department of Communicable Diseases & Environmental Determinants of Health (CDE).

The Climate Change and Environmental Determinants of Health Unit (CE) contributes to the work of CDE and other areas of the organization by developing and implementing programs with regional and country partners, to prevent disease through healthy environments. The incumbent is responsible for providing advice and technical leadership to support local development strategies and methodologies to tackle climate change and environmental determinants of health as well as the setting of national environmental health agendas.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:

  • A university degree in environmental health, climate change, sanitary engineering or other health discipline, and a master’s degree in public health, sustainable development, or related field from a recognized institution.
  • Thirteen years of combined national and international progressively responsible experience working in a broad range of sustainable development and environmental health programs.  Experience should include at least five years working in areas related to environmental health, climate change and health, and/or toxicology, indoor and outdoor air, epidemiology, water and sanitation and hygiene, and chemical, biological, and physical environments.
  • Very good knowledge of English or Spanish with a working knowledge of the other language.

Salary range: US$ 125,833.75 - US$ 137,660.59, net of income taxes.  PAHO/WHO’s compensation package includes dependency benefits, pension plan, health insurance scheme, and 30 days annual leave.  Benefits for internationally recruited staff may include travel and removal expenses on appointment and separation, assignment grant, rental subsidy, and home leave.
