CFSSA Credential Eligibility & Application

Eligibility

There are two ways an individual can meet the eligibility requirements for the CFSSA.

Bachelor’s Degree Track

Individuals are eligible for the CFSSA credential if they have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education or equivalent with 30 semester hours (or 45 quarter hours) of core science education (a combination of biological sciences, chemistry, physical sciences, food technology, nutrition, medical science, engineering, epidemiology, veterinary medical science, or related science field).
  • Three years of experience in food production or conducting regulatory food inspections at a supervisory or advanced capacity.
  • Evidence of HACCP training. Completion of a two-day or equivalent HACCP training course based on the principles of CODEX Alimentarius. The course must include an assessment and provide a certificate.
  • Evidence of completion of the Professional Food Safety Auditor Training Course or equivalent course.

Experience Track

Individuals are eligible for the CFSSA credential if they have:

  • 30 semester hours (or 45 quarter hours) of college level core science education (a combination of biological sciences, chemistry, physical sciences, food technology, nutrition, medical science, engineering, epidemiology, veterinary medical science, or related science field).
  • Five years of experience in food production or conducting regulatory food inspections at a supervisory or advanced capacity.
  • Hold a current CCFS Credential in good standing.
  • Evidence of HACCP training. Completion of a two-day or equivalent HACCP training course based on the principles of CODEX Alimentarius. The course must include an assessment and provide a certificate.
  • Evidence of completion of the Professional Food Safety Auditor Training Course or equivalent course.

Application

Applications must be completed and returned to us for review at least 4 weeks prior to the exam date. Applications received less than 4 weeks prior to the planned exam date may require rescheduling the exam for another date.

A complete application must include:

  • A completed CFSSA Application | PDF
  • All official college transcripts. Transcripts must be provided to us in one of the following ways to be considered an official transcript:
    • In the sealed envelope from the college Registrar’s Office or Transcript Office
    • Emailed from the school or transcript service to our support@neha.org
  • Work Experience Verification Form
  • Appropriate fees
  • Third-party review if education is international

Expiration

Applications are valid for two years from the date we receive them. If the test has not been taken within two years of applying, a new application and fees must be submitted. Pearson VUE testing authorizations are valid for one year.

CFSSA Credential Maintenance

To maintain the CFSSA credential, individuals must:

  • Earn and submit a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education every two years
  • Pay renewal fee every two years ($195.00 members; $310.00 non-members)
  • Agree to and sign our Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct Policy
