Time Spent Outdoors
Children spend more time outdoors than other age groups
Children are likely to spend more time than adults outside. This leaves them vulnerable to various outdoor hazards for extended periods of time.
This can include:
- Sun exposure leading to sunburns and heat exhaustion
- Poor air quality increases children's risk of asthma exacerbations, including particulate matter and ozone.
- Exposure to pesticides that may have drifted from nearby farms, or pollutants from factories or highways. These toxicants can stick to toys or other objects, absorb into dirt and grass, or be inhaled by children playing outside
- Exposure to hazards left by flooding, like soil contaminated by wastewater
