Our internship program encourages outstanding undergraduate and graduate students to consider careers in environmental and public health in an academic or industry setting by providing training and education opportunities. Interns will learn about our work, gain valuable insight and experience in environmental health, and support initiatives in environmental health science, policy, marketing and social media, and more.

Internships are open year-round and based on project availability.

Students that are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at the time of application are eligible to apply.


Complete the online application. Applicants will be asked to create an account before proceeding with the application process.

Applicants will also be asked to provide:

  • Unofficial transcript(s)
    • Include a copy of your unofficial transcript(s) that covers at least the last 12 months.
    • For first-year college students, the transcripts should include high school and the first semester.
  • One letter of recommendation
    • The letter of recommendation must include the name and contact information of the referrer.
  • Personal statement
    • In 500 words or less, detail your current academic activities; interest in NEHA's Student Internship Program; expectations from the program; and future career goals and perspectives.


Applicants will be contacted by email if their application is accepted and will have three business days to accept the internship offer. Applicants will be asked to sign a letter of acceptance agreeing to complete the program requirements.

Any publications, patents, posters, infographics, or other graphics, talks, or projects that result from a student intern's participation in the NEHA Student Internship Program must credit the program by including the funding acknowledgment.
