NEHA Announces Host Sites for Internships

Map of 2017 National Environmental Public Health Internship Program Host Sites around the United StatesNEHA has selected its host sites for the 2017 National Environmental Public Health Internship Program! Out of the 77 applications received, we selected 25 health departments, all of which serve medically underserved areas or populations. The host sites are in 22 different states: 11 rural health departments, 14 metro health departments, and 1 tribal agency.

NEHA’s National Environmental Public Health Internship Program participants will be working on innovative projects in the summer of 2017. Here are some examples submitted by the 25 selected host sites:

  • Industrial hygiene in nail salons
  • A Chesapeake Bay restoration project
  • Alleviating food waste and food deserts
  • Alleviating diseases of poverty and other Environmental Justice issues
  • Dealing with Zika in a border town
  • Analyzing the effects of the Gold King mine release
  • Non-paint sources of lead among children of refugees and immigrants
  • Addressing health equity issues with climate change
  • Using PACE-EH in micro-communities in the Florida Keys
  • Coordinating a Toxic Threat Strike Team in disadvantaged areas in the Los Angeles area
  • Using informatics and data to solve problems, even researching the implementation of drones
