Environmental Health Specialist 

About the Position

Position Summary: To promote the environmental health of Riley County through the enforcement of the Riley County Sanitary Code by providing education to the public regarding environmental health programs/regulations, and by providing inspection and technical assistance services for water and wastewater systems.


  • Conducts field inspections and writes reports regarding private water supplies (e.g. inspects sites for drilling, evaluates wellhead construction, and promotes the wellhead protection program.)
  • Issues permits for all water wells and submits well plugging reports to the state.


  • Conducts field inspections and writes reports regarding private wastewater treatment facilities (e.g. evaluates proposed sites to determine suitable type of system, conducts soil profile and percolation tests, and designs appropriate repair of existing systems).


  • Answers requests for assistance and investigates environmental health complaints.
  • Maintains knowledge of and enforces the provisions of the Riley County Sanitary Code.


Position Requirements:

Education:  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in natural science, environmental health or public health with at least 45 credit hours of classroom and laboratory coursework in math, biology, microbiology, geology, chemistry, environmental engineering and physics.

License(s)/Certification(s):  Registered Environmental Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS) certification from the National Environmental Health Association or ability to obtain REHS/RS certification within 6 months of employment. Valid driver’s license is required.
