Environmental Health Specialist Trainee

About the Position

The Contra Costa County Health Services Department is recruiting qualified individuals to fill one (1) Environmental Health Specialist Trainee position. Reporting to the Supervising Environmental Health Specialist, this position will be assigned to one of the following programs Retail Food, Recreational Health, Land Use or Solid Waste Programs located in Concord and will be responsible for performing routine environmental health inspections and investigations in a training capacity. The incumbent may work variable shifts. Employment in this class is limited to a maximum of 36 months. During that period, the incumbent is expected to obtain a certificate of Registration as an Environmental Health Specialist.


Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree with a major in environmental health, a science curriculum or closely related field; a letter certifying eligibility to become an Environmental Health Specialist Trainee provided by the California State Department of Public Health, Registered Environmental Health Specialist Program; a  valid CA driver’s license; knowledge of the biological principles used in the environmental health field; strong computer, interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills; and the ability to learn and apply provisions of the Health and Safety Code, principles of environmental health and sanitary science, and methods and practices used in inspecting and correcting unsanitary conditions.
