Sustainability & Environmental Education Supervisor 

About the Position

Under general supervision, the Sustainability and Environmental Education Supervisor is responsible for the implementation of the City’s Sustainability and Environmental Education Program, including education related to composting, recycling, litter awareness and prevention, air quality, water quality and conservation, gardening and landscaping, energy conservation, green building, proper disposal of household chemicals and trash and the Live Green Volunteer program.


  • Supervises, instructs, schedules, reviews and evaluates the work activity of assigned staff.
  • Plans, organizes and supervises a comprehensive program of work activities related to the City’s Sustainability and Environmental Education goals and objectives.
  • Coordinates the City’s environmental education activities and training with the Plano Independent School District.
  • Develops and facilitates the marketing strategies for all Sustainability and Environmental Education programs.  Surveys users to determine satisfaction and most effective marketing strategies.
  • Prepares, monitors and evaluates short- and long-term goals and objectives of subordinate staff and of the overall Sustainability and Environmental Education program.
  • Maintains effective communication among the City, Plano Independent School District, Chamber of Commerce and community organizations to develop partnerships and outreach programs.
  • Works with other City staff to establish and maintain relationships with media contacts.
  • Oversee planning and implementation of several special events per year including the Great American Cleanup, Texas Recycles Day, Environmental Community Awards and others as appropriate.
  • Oversees the research, analysis and preparation of special reports, studies, and surveys.
  • Provides input to manager and assists with budget preparation and monitoring of staff expenditures.
  • Develops training programs as appropriate for staff and other departments.
  • Coordinates storm water management plan education activities and reporting.
  • Coordinates staff’s participation in local, regional, and national organizations focused on sustainability and environmental education goals and objectives including Keep America Beautiful, Keep Texas Beautiful, Recycling Association of Texas, Solid Waste Association of North America, North American Association for Environmental Education, and North Central Texas Council of Governments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



Knowledge of: Environmental issues and sustainability practices; solid waste services; public relations, customer service, and public education practices; supervisory practices; marketing techniques and strategic planning; basic accounting and budgeting principles.

Skill in: Providing effective supervision to assigned staff; developing and implementing educational programs; communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.


Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Marketing, Public Administration, Environmental Health, Sustainability, or related field.

Experience: Five (5) years of experience in Environmental Education, Sustainability, Environmental Health and/or Science including two (2) years of supervisory experience.  Master’s degree and demonstrated leadership as team/project leader of department programs may substitute for two years of experience.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Licenses: Texas Class C driver’s license.
