About the Position

Reporting to the Executive Director, Food Protection Program Manager leads initiatives to ensure a consistent, positive experience for every customer/operator who intersects with the Food Protection Program. The ideal candidate is self-assured and assertive, as they must be able to mobilize and lead change while overcoming political challenges, breaking down organizational norms and cultivating cooperative relationships across the county.   • Primarily responsible for defining the scope, planning specific activities, and supervising personnel in the implementation of health department programs regarding food protection services, public bathing, and barbershops.
  • Assigns daily work, motivates and encourages subordinates, assists subordinates in resolving client concerns and responding to inquiries, problems, and complaints.
  • Reviews and prepares analyses and reports of activities, costs, and operations; and forecasts data to determine progress toward stated goals and objectives.
  • Makes recommendations concerning remedial actions to correct food protection issues; initiates enforcement procedures related to food protection programs; recommends and implements compliance actions such as warnings, fines, compliance conferences, hearings, license suspension, or closure; and over-sees follow-up investigations to monitor progress toward correcting the condition.
  • Selects, evaluates, trains, and standardizes staff members to ensure the efficient delivery of program services; builds and supports a customer first, customer friendly orientation; and recommends associated personnel actions.
  • Represents the TCCHD through professional affiliations and participation in community groups.
  • Participates in licensing and certification programs.
  • Prepares recommendations for the annual budget for supervised programs and assists in monitoring expenditures against the budget during the year.
  • Provides technical assistance to municipalities, industry, community groups, and others regarding Food Protection programs; and solicits cooperation in promoting sound environmental public health /public health practices.
  • Coordinates inspections and enforcement activities with other federal and local officials.
  • Completes required training in support of duties and responsibilities of this position.
  • Other duties as assigned including those required to fulfill activities in support of public health emergency operations.



Bachelor’s degree in physical, natural, or biological science, public health, environmental health, environmental science, or related science field is required with a minimum of thirty (30) semester hours in natural, physical, or biological sciences, public health and/or environmental health. Master’s degree in Public Health or a related science field preferred.


Five years of experience as an environmental specialist with specific experience of 3-5 years in a food safety program required. Five years of supervisory experience preferred.
