Assistant/Associate Professor - Environmental Health Sciences

About the Position

Western Carolina University is a regional comprehensive university consisting of over 11,000 students with its main campus located in Cullowhee, NC. The Environmental Health Sciences program is housed in the new 160,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Health and Human Sciences Building. The College of Health and Human Sciences’ faculty are committed to creating and implementing a program of inter-professional experiences for students enrolled in the health professions, and opportunities for inter-professional research and collaboration is extensive. In addition, the western North Carolina rural, aging and medically underserved location provides numerous and rich opportunities for research and grant acquisition.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the vision and mission of the Environmental Health Sciences Program.
  • Develop and deliver courses within the Environmental Health Sciences Program.
  • Mentor and advise students in collaboration with the Advising Center with regard to academic progress and professional development.
  • Engage in scholarly activities and creative contributions within the profession based upon the Boyer Model of scholarship for the tenure track position
  • Provide service to the university, profession, and community.
  • Maintain currency in the academic discipline through continuing education, research, and/or participation in activities within the profession, including involvement within professional organizations at the state, district and national levels.
  • Work cooperatively and collegially with all faculty and staff in the Environmental Health Sciences Program, School of Health Sciences, and across the institution.
  • Carry out other assignments and duties as assigned by the Environmental Health Sciences Program Director, the Director of the School of Health Sciences, and Dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in environmental and/or occupational health or closely related degree from a regionally accredited university
  • One year prior experience teaching undergraduate students
  • Ability to teach introductory undergraduate courses in environmental health
  • Research or practice-based experience in environmental health
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in environmental and/or occupational health or closely related degree from a regionally accredited university (degree must be awarded by official hire date)
  • Experience teaching industrial hygiene or occupational health and safety
  • Evidence of scholarly activity and research agenda
  • Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and success
  • Demonstrated success with undergraduate mentoring
  • Evidence of service to the profession and/or community
