Environmental Health Specialist
About the Position
New Hanover County is seeking experienced and professional Environmental Health Specialist candidates to fill multiple vacancies on our Public Health Services team. The selected candidate will perform independent field work in the areas of food service sanitation or on-site wastewater systems.
Duties in Food Service include area assess risk and exposure to environmental hazards with regard to food safety; promote and protect public health through education, inspection, surveillance, and enforcement related to food service sanitation; evaluate establishments to determine compliance with food sanitation and water quality standards; investigate complaints and reports of food borne or other illnesses related to food service operations, childcare facilities, institutions, and lodging establishments. Other EHS duties may be assigned based on authorizations held by the EHS.
Duties in On-site waste water in include evaluating site/soil conditions and proposed usage to determine suitability; issuing or denying permits to construct new systems and/or supplies; diagnosing and recommending actions to mitigate problems, and/or noncompliance; interpreting, applying and explaining ground and surface water quality standards; investigating a broad spectrum of environmental-public health complaints and/or reports of illness; and, assessing the risk of exposure to environmental hazards.
Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health or related field, including 30 semester hours in the physical or biological sciences and two years of related environmental health experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors and the general public. , techniques for gathering data and interpreting results, federal, state and local environmental and public health laws. Must have computer skills including Word, Excel and Outlook, and the ability to learn new software programs, specifically in project tracking.
Salary is negotiable within the hiring range for experienced Environmental Health professionals who meet the minimum requirements of the position, including possession of valid registration with the North Carolina Board of Registered Environmental Health Specialists Examiners and authorization by the NC Department of Health and Human Services to enforce state laws and regulations applicable to food safety, drinking water wells and/or septic systems.
Priority consideration will be given to those applicants meeting the minimum education and experience requirements for the position. Applicants meeting the required education and having no experience or only partial experience may be considered at a trainee rate of at least $19.47
