The Senior Port Health and Preparedness Manager manages a business unit that performs Detection, Assessment, Notification, Reporting and Control of public health risks at points of entry, in order to prevent the international spread of disease or contamination without unreasonably hindering international transport or trade. Ensures compliance with the Quarantine Act 2017 and Regulations while also ensuring that Bermuda meets its obligations under the International Health Regulations 2005 and subsequent amendments. The post holder collaborates, networks and strengthens relationships with local and international port health agencies and related stakeholders to develop and maintain effective contingency arrangements and procedures in order to anticipate and deal with various public health events. The post holder also provides expert professional advice, training, support and guidance to relevant stakeholders on the application of national policy at ports of entry, and wider afield as needed, including technical issues encountered and the service development of Port Health and related preparedness issues. 

Due to the nature of this post, the post holder may be required to fulfil work duties on the weekend, holidays, on-call, and during emergency situations.

Qualifications

Interested applicants must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent in Public Health or a relevant field of study (e.g. Master’s in Public Health Administration, Environmental Health, etc.). Applicants must be a current registered member in good standing with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (Corporate or Graduate), Membership of the Faculty of Public Health, American Public Health Association, Association of Port Health Authorities, or relevant professional association. Applicants must possess a minimum of five years’ relevant experience in port and border health programme of work and other public health initiatives with a focus on continuous improvement. Must also possess a minimum of five years’ experience in managing a multi-disciplinary team.   

In lieu of a Master’s degree or equivalent in Public Health or a relevant field of study (e.g. Master’s in Public Health Administration, Environmental Health, etc.), consideration may be given to applicants who possess a minimum of:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, Epidemiology, Public Health, Environmental Health or relevant field of study; and
  • Ten (10) years’ relevant Port Health, Border Health or Public Health experience; and 
  • Membership in good standing with either the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (Corporate or Graduate), Membership of the Faculty of Public Health, American Public Health Association, Association of Port Health Authorities, or relevant professional association.
