About the Position

First District Health Unit is accepting applications for the full-time position of Director of Environmental Health. The Director will develop and organize operational and staffing aspects of environmental health work; plan, organize, schedule, assign and supervise the work of staff providing environmental health services; advise staff on the interpretation and application of Environmental Health rules, regulations, policies and laws; and perform other related work as required. This is a senior management position with the responsibility of working with all disciplines of public health to support budget development and monitoring, program development, evaluation and implementation.

This is a senior management position with the responsibility of working with all disciplines of public health to support budget development and monitoring, program development, evaluation, and implementation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Serves as liaison between environmental health staff and Executive Officer and Health Officer. Provide direction and oversight for environmental health programs and activities. Develop, evaluate and monitor program objectives and goals, and coordinate efforts to implement changes to policies and practices. Hire, schedule, assign, evaluate, and direct the work of environmental health practitioners and other public health staff engaged in carrying out environmental health services in a fiscally responsible manner. Advise staff on the interpretation and application of program and agency policies and public health laws and regulations. Represent First District Health Unit on community boards and organizations. Assist in disaster response as directed by the Executive Officer. Assist the Executive Officer in the development and implementation of FDHU’s community assessment, strategic plan, and quality improvement projects. Support the procurement of funding for FDHU activities through grant writing. Resolve differences between staff or programs. Provide orientation, teaching, and guidance to staff to improve quality of service. Participate as a team member of the FDHU Management team and work with all disciplines of public health to address health issues. Participate in community planning concerning health and social welfare problems. Cooperate with the ND State Health Department and other entities to assure coordination of work. Supervise the Building and Maintenance staff of the Minot office. Travel is required frequently (not typically overnight)Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities Manages 6 –9 non-supervisory employees.

Qualifications

Required:
Bachelor’s degree in
⦁ An accredited environmental health, public health, or food science curriculum, OR
⦁ A physical, chemical or biological science
Five years of professional experience in
⦁ Environmental work, with programs promoting public/environmental health, AND/OR
⦁ Enforcing public/environmental health laws and regulations
Staff supervision experience or demonstration of staff leadership

Preferred:
⦁ Grant writing experience
⦁ Demonstrated knowledge of Public Health roles and responsibilitiesLicensureRequirements
⦁ Licensed or eligible for licensure as an Environmental Health Practitioner
⦁ Current North Dakota driver’s license
