About the Position

Deputy Executive Officer, Policy and Equity
San Francisco, California

The Air District is seeking an innovative, strategic, and collaborative leader with a demonstrated track record and commitment to equity, inclusion and community engagement to fill the newly created role of Deputy Executive Officer, Policy and Equity (DEO).  Reporting to the Executive Officer, the DEO will lead and direct the Air District’s programs, policies and initiatives to ensure the protection and improvement of air quality in the seven Bay Area counties regulated by the Air District.  The position will also oversee the Air District’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives internally and externally.  Additionally, the DEO will collaborate with all units of the Air District’s operations to ensure a “best in class” and fully integrated community engagement process, using the Air District’s Community Health Protection Program and their Public Participation Plan to enhance the Air District’s focus on air quality and the reduction of air pollution. The DEO and their team will partner with community groups, environmental advocates, state regulatory agencies, industry and the general public to improve air quality throughout the Air District.  


Candidates must be visionary leaders with outstanding people, community relationship and trust building skills.  The ideal candidate will have direct and effective, experience operationalizing equity and inclusion, affecting organizational change, and fostering collaborative and inclusive environments. The successful candidate will be politically astute, culturally competent and authentic in working with diverse stakeholders in complex and political environments.  Candidates will possess excellent oral and written communication skills, be transparent and great listeners.  Finalists will be smart, humble, and outcome-driven problem solvers with an explicit commitment to equitable environmental justice solutions.

Candidates should have a degree from an accredited four-year college or university, along with a minimum of five years of related work experience in policy development and program administration, plus 3 years in an executive level or senior managerial capacity.  Experience working in equity and inclusion with a public agency is strongly preferred.
