About the Position

The Detroit Health Department is seeking to recruit Environmental Health Specialists. The City of Detroit has been in an exciting growth phase for the last 8 years and that is continuing post-pandemic, so it is provides a lot of new and exciting experiences in Environmental Health and Food Safety. All inspectors do a mixture of food safety and other inspections.


Environmental Health Specialist I – Entry Level  -  $45K - $55K

Environmental Health Specialist II – REHS or RS certified - $52K – $67K

Environmental Health Specialist III – Supervisor - REHS or RS certified  -  $60K - $78K


Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, public health, biology, chemistry, physics, natural science, environmental science, food science or a related field with at least 30 hours of science (biology, chemistry, physics, or statistics). Experience in conducting food safety, environmental health or related inspections is strongly preferred.

State of Michigan Operator license

Preferred Qualifications

At least three years of experience in environmental health or public health. Registered Sanitarian or Registered Environmental Health Specialist (National Environmental Health Association or State of Michigan) - Required for EHSII or III.  Experience as a Plan Review Officer, Standardized Trainer, or investigating foodborne or environmental illness outbreaks, especially in an urban environment.
