About the Cover

The popularity of farmers markets has grown over the past two decades and there is an increasing need to ensure that fresh produce and ready-to-eat foods sold at these markets are safe and free of microbial contamination. The objective of this issue’s cover article, “Food Safety Resources for Managers and Vendors of Farmers Markets in Texas,” was to survey farmers market managers and vendors to identify food safety educational needs and current food practices. Furthermore, observational studies were conducted at 10 farmers markets in Houston, Texas, to identify positive and high-risk practices. Educational materials were created based on the study’s survey and observational findings and were disseminated to food market managers and vendors.
