The authors of
this month’s
cover feature,
“The Distri-
bution and
Public Health
Consequences
of Releases of
Chemicals In-
tended for Pool
Use in 17 States,
2001–2009,” analyzed the limited data in
the literature about pool chemical inci-
dents. The results of the authors’ investi-
gation showed that 60% of the analyzed
incidents led to injury and half of those
injured were under 18. Human error was
the culprit nearly 72% of the time; thus,
the authors conclude that public health
and safety messages targeting private pool
owners and public pool operators could
reduce the number of these incidents.
