Vector Information

The American cockroach is one of the largest cockroaches in the US. It prefers dark, moist areas and is commonly found in inhabited areas and feeds on a wide variety of items. These pests are able to transmit gastroenteritis diseases to people. The American cockroach is approximately 1.5 inches long with a reddish-brown body. The center portion of it's body is light brown while the outer edges are yellow. The adults have wings that span the length of the body. They are capable of flying, but rarely do so. They prefer dark, moist areas and feed on decaying organic matter. Common sites include basements, kitchens, clothes hampers, drains, and bathroom plumbing. American cockroaches are able to feed on a variety of materials including cheese, beer, leather, bakery products, starch in bookbindings, glue, hair, flakes of dried skin, soiled clothing, and dead animals. These pests are able to transmit diseases, primarily gastroenteritis, to humans.

*Disease transmission varies locally. This map depicts where vectors can be found geographically and provides information about diseases these vectors might carry. Vectors might be present in a state or locality, however, and not be carriers of any particular disease. In addition, identified vectors may have a presence in a state, but may not be found throughout that state.
