Vector Information

The Brown Dog Tick is found worldwide. This tick is able to transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Dogs are the primary host. These ticks live predominantly in and around human settlements and can easily infect households. They are able to reproduce within three months which can make it difficult to eradicate infestations in a home or kennel. Brown Dog ticks are easily identifiable as they are small and red-brown in color. They lack any ornamentation. They tend to be long and narrow in shape.

*Disease transmission varies locally. This map depicts where vectors can be found geographically and provides information about diseases these vectors might carry. Vectors might be present in a state or locality, however, and not be carriers of any particular disease. In addition, identified vectors may have a presence in a state, but may not be found throughout that state.
