Safe public aquatic venues depend on science-based regulations that help prevent injuries, disease outbreaks, and other health hazards. This issue’s cover article examines how state, tribal, local, and territorial public health agencies use the Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to strengthen aquatic safety. Using surveys and focus groups, the authors found that jurisdictions most often adopt and use the MAHC à la carte—selectively incorporating or referencing portions of the code rather than adopting it in its entirety—to address local needs and regulatory priorities. The findings reinforce the value of maintaining an up-to-date national resource while identifying opportunities to strengthen implementation support and adoption tracking.
