About the Cover
Air pollution is a well-established threat to human health, but its effects could extend to broader social and behavioral outcomes. This month’s cover article examines the relationship between fine particulate matter (PM2.5), socioeconomic conditions, and crime rates across 10 highly polluted U.S. states from 2000–2022. After accounting for differences among states and changes over time, the study found a significant positive association between PM2.5 concentrations and crime rates. Although the findings do not establish causality, they offer a broader perspective on the potential social costs of pollution and the interconnected benefits of improving air quality.
